We all know this quote “comparison is the thief of joy”.
I feel like this quote might even be one of the of the quotes I read the most this year. Well, who didnt? but although i read this quote everyday, and even though i even know it by heart i still find myself comparing to other peoples instagram lifes – yes, there instagram lifes and not their real lifes.
lately the holy spirit′s been speaking to me about this topic.. i realized, that the reason why we still find ourselves comparing to somebody else is because we don′t have a foundation in our lifes. well, actually we have a foundation – ourselves.
if you have yourself as a foundation, youll be like the man who built his house on sand. why sand? because sand is a substance that breaks whenever anything around it is shaking. every flood, wind or rain will make you fall. for you the wind and rain may be someone else′s thigh gap, their success and fame or anything else.
if you have yourself as a foundation, youll be like the man who built his house on sand.
because you have yourself as a foundation anyone or anything that seems to be better or more good-looking or wealthier etc. than what you are built on – in other words anyone or anything that seems better than what you have – whatever or whoever it is, it will make your foundation fall. and that is when the enemy takes a seat in our minds and starts attacking us with thougths of doubt questioning and even telling us that we′re not worthy. that we dont deserve anything good. that we′re dirty, ugly, not enough.
what these thoughts do is they make us question the reality of what god does not just say about us, but the reality of who we are. consumed by these doubts we start to take the focus off jesus and his word and put the focus on ourselves. but since faith is the very thing that shapes our behaviour and because our faith is based on the hope of jesus christ – the very thing and the very person that we dont see, the whole game starts to take on another level…
comparison, or the fruit of comparison is the very thing that doesnt just make us doubt who we are, but it makes us belief those doubts and therefor doubt the trustworthiness of god and his word, since our identity is found in his word. and doubt in the trustworthiness of god and his word paralyzes the work of the holy spirit in our lifes.
comparison is the very thing that doesnt just make us doubt who we are, but it makes us belief those doubts and therefor doubt the trustworthiness of god and his word
you cant defeat comparison by learning quotes by heart or reading the same bible verses over and over again because comparison attacks faith. so what is your faith built on- yourself or christ? what is your foundation?
you know, the fruit of comparison is not a product of the lack of knowing who we are – thats why memorizing quotes and scripture doesnt really seem to help – but its a product of lack of faith in the trustworthiness of god and his word.
dont get me wrong, being attacked by thougths of comparison doesnt necessarily mean that we lack faith, but being overcome by those thoughts and end up believing them does. someone once said having faith must be excercised to grow. the way you have to workout day in and day out to make them muscles grow is the way we have to excercise faith day in and day out so that when you get attacked by thougths of comparison, you wont be defeated. you will defeat it.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
